*************************** READ ME FIRST! *************************** WELCOME TO THE OREGON TRAIL! Here are a few tidbits of information that may smooth your path on The Oregon Trail. The Oregon Trail 3.0 requires a VGA video adapter, Microsoft or 100% compatible mouse and driver, and a minimum of 480K free memory. You will need a minimum of 520K free memory if you want to turn the sound on. VIDEO SETUP The Oregon Trail normally uses a 16 color VGA mode. On most newer video adapters, you can set The Oregon Trail to try to use a 256 (640x480x256) color mode. Not all adapters support this mode or the detection of it. A VESA driver may be needed to use the 256 color mode. Consult your video adapter manual for instructions on the use of a VESA driver. If you set The Oregon Trail to use 256 colors and the program fails to load, use the SETUP program to set it back to 16 colors. SOUND SETUP You should hear music at the initial graphics screen. ALT-M will turn the music on and off. If music doesn't play, check the sound configuration using the SETUP program. See your sound card documentation for information on your card settings. The sound and music routines that The Oregon Trail use are not compatible with Microsoft Windows. While running under Windows, sound and music will be disabled. SOUNDBLASTER AND SOUNDBLASTER COMPATIBLES Incorrect IRQ settings will cause the program to halt or hang along the trail (anytime a digitized sound occurs). You can test the sound setup by pressing ALT-S when you first run the program. Thank you for purchasing The Oregon Trail. We hope you enjoy the program as much as we enjoyed creating it for you.
