******** SPECIAL NOTE FOR SMARTDRV AND OTHER DISK CACHE USERS *****

SMARTDRV:

SMARTDRV will not work properly with Forgotten Realms: Menzoberranzan
in its normal configuration.

You Can: 1) Remove SMARTDRV (you can do this by creating a boot disk)

          2) Remove SMARTDRV's write cache by typing SMARTDRV followed
             by the hard drive letter.

             Example: SMARTDRV C (Enter)

This will remove the write cache on your C: drive. If
you have more than one hard drive, repeat this command
for each drive. So, if you have a C: and a D:, you
             would type:

               SMARTDRV C (Enter)
               SMARTDRV D (Enter)

OTHER DISK CACHE PROGRAMS:

Any program that has a write cache enabled is prone to data loss.
Please remove the write cache or remove the disk cache program
from your configuration (you can do this by creating a boot disk).

If you do not take the above precautions, you may exibit data loss!!!

                          CHARACTER GENERATION:

Character generation takes place in the chapel of House Baenre, where
an altar is surrounded by eight burning braziers. One brazier at a
time, the process of creating your characters begins. After each
Player Character characteristic is chosen, the view circles around the
scene to the next brazier.

Select Sex:

In the first brazier, two figures appear, one representing a male
character and one representing a female character. Left-click on the
appropriate figure to choose the sex of your character. Your selection
is displayed near the bottom of the screen.

Select Race:

The scene circles to the next brazier and a candle melts to reveal six
race icons. The choices are: human, gnome, dwarf, elf, half-elf, and
halfling. Left-click on the appropriate icon to choose the race of
your character. Your selection is displayed near the bottom of the
screen.

Select Alignment:

In this brazier a tower representing the various alignments appears.
Left-clicking over the choices displayed near the top and bottom of
the tower causes the tower to rotate, displaying a new choice. The
choices are: lawful good, lawful neutral, chaotic good, chaotic
neutral, neutral good, and true neutral. Your choice may be limited by
certain class restrictions. Your selection is displayed near the
bottom of the screen.

When the selections at the top and bottom of the tower show the
desired alignment, move the cursor to the bottom center of the screen
over the word SELECT. Left-click over SELECT to choose the alignment
shown in the brazier. Your selection is displayed near the bottom of
the screen.

Select Face:

In the next brazier, several of the portraits available to your
character are displayed, along with the selection MORE at the top of
the screen. Left-clicking on MORE displays more available portraits.
Left-click on the appropriate portrait to choose the face of your
character. Your selection is displayed near the bottom of the screen.

Select Hit Points and Attributes:

In the next brazier, the character's Hit Points appear, along with the
various character attributes.

Reroll: This choice randomly generates a new set of numbers for both
Hit Points and Attributes.

[Shift to MIN/MAX]: By pressing and holding the Shift key, then
left-clicking over either your character's Hit Points number or the
appropriate Attributes dice, the number of your choice automatically
goes to its maximum possible value. By pressing and holding the Shift
key, then right-clicking over either your character's Hit Points
number or the appropriate Attributes dice, the number of your choice
automatically goes to its minimum possible value.

Attributes: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom,
and Charisma. To the right of each attribute three dice appear. By
left-clicking over these dice the numerical value of the chosen
attribute is adjusted upward. Should you wish to reduce a particular
attribute number, see the instructions for [Shift to MIN/MAX] above.

To choose the Hit Points and Attributes numbers appearing on the
screen. left-click over the word SELECT centered near the bottom of
the screen.

Name:

A tombstone appears upon which your character's name can be typed.
Names may be up to fifteen characters in length. Hit the Return-key
when you have completed typing your character's name.

Keep or Delete:

At this point all the pertinent information about the character is
known. Left-clicking on the word KEEP saves the character information
generated and you are automatically returned to the first brazier to
begin the process over again, this time in order to generate the
second character necessary to start the game. Selecting DELETE returns
you to the first stage to begin the generation again.

Using the Escape Key:

During the character generation process, pressing the Escape-key
returns you to the character generation step previous to the one
currently displayed. For example, pressing the Escape-key while
choosing character Alignment returns you to the beginning of the
sequence for selecting the character's Class.

Pressing the Escape-key during the cinematic leading to a selection
step will take you to the selection step.
